From the stoneworkers of Egypt to the marble carvers of Greece, the chisel turned solid rock into form. As Michelangelo put it, the shape was already in the stone — the carving just uncovered it.
Some of the great stone structures were carved from a single rock, from the top down. There was no undoing a cut — every stroke had to be right the first time.
